William James described pragmatism in 1907 as a brand new term for some old ways of thinking. His lecture series, "Pragmatism - A New Name for Old Methods of Thinkin'" was an answer to this. The lecture began by identifying a fundamental and intractable tension between two ways to think in the hard-headed empiricist adherence of experience and relying on facts, and the tender-minded preference for a priori principles that is akin to rationalization. He proclaimed that pragmatism would help bridge this gap.

He also defined 'praxy' as an idea of truth that is rooted in the actual world and not in an abstract idealized theory or philosophy. He argued that pragmatism is the most true and natural approach to human problems, and that all other philosophical theories were flawed in one way or other.

In the 1900s, many other philosophers developed pragmatist views that included George Herbert Mead, W.E.B Du Bois and Alain Locke. They developed pragmatic views about the structure of science, education and public policy. John Dewey articulated pragmatist views on topics such as education and democracy, as well as public policy.
